Abstract Beekeeping is affected by adverse climatic conditions and availability of floral resources. This study aimed to survey and characterize the flora in São João do Piauí, a semi-arid region in Piauí, Brazil, and to identify species providing resources to bees. Flowering plants were observed for 18 months, and records were taken of flowering date, growth habit, visitation and resources collected by bees. Melissopalinological analysis of honey produced in the area was performed. A total of 67 flowering plant species were recorded, of which 49 were considered as bee plants, with a predominance of herbs and shrubs. The low rainfall reduces the number of flowering species, which makes important the conservation and multiplication of species which bloom in dry season, such as Ipomoea glabra, Myracrodruon urundeuva, Sida cordifolia and Ziziphus joazeiro, as well as species that contribute to honey production such as Mimosa tenuiflora, Mesosphaerum suaveolens and Croton sonderianus.

A abelha sem ferrão Melipona subnitida atualmente está presente em quase toda a região nordeste, em função da boa adaptabilidade ao semiárido nordestino e do potencial econômico-ecológico proporcionado pela produção de mel e pela polinização de cultivos em condições de confinamento. Apesar disso, é uma espécie ameaçada devido a processos de degradação ambiental, dentre os quais estão o desmatamento, o uso indiscriminado de agrotóxicos e o extrativismo. Tais interferências tendem a isolar as populações de Jandaíra, provocando uma queda na variabilidade genética e, consequentemente, uma redução na capacidade adaptativa da espécie. Porém, técnicas de biologia molecular estão sendo implementadas, possibilitando que populações desse tipo sejam avaliadas quanto ao seu grau de variabilidade genética. Marcadores moleculares do tipo microssatélites de DNA vêm sendo bastante usados, porém, em função do alto custo exigido para seu desenvolvimento, diversos estudos vêm empregando microssatélites transferidos de táxons próximos com amplo sucesso em estudos voltados à caracterização e à diversidade genética. Dessa forma, a presente revisão objetivou avaliar os mais relevantes aspectos bioecológicos e genético-comportamentais envolvidos na conservação da abelha Jandaíra, a fim de auxiliar na avaliação do grau de diversidade genética da espécie, bem como da sua distribuição entre indivíduos e populações da abelha sem ferrão M. subnitida.

The stingless bee Melipona subnitida is now present almost everywhere in the Brazilian Northeastern, as a consequence of its good adaptability to the semiarid and economic and ecological potential offered by the honey production and pollination of commercial crops under confined conditions. Nevertheless, it is an endangered species due to environmental degradation processes, among which are: deforestation, indiscriminate use of pesticides and honey extraction. Such interference tends to isolate populations of Jandaíra causing a decrease in genetic variability, and therefore a reduction in the adaptive capacity of the species. However, advanced Molecular Biology techniques have been used allowing such populations to be assessed for their degree of genetic variability. Molecular markers such as microsatellite DNA are widely applied to genetic diversity studies. However, due to the high costs required for their development, several studies have been focused on the use of microsatellites transferred from closely related taxa with much success in studies on the genetic characterization of species and their populations. Therefore, this review aimed to evaluate the most relevant ecological and behavioral aspects in order to assist the population genetic studies of the stingless bee M. subnitida.

Foram localizados dez ninhos de Geotrigona subterranea em áreas de transição entre o Cerrado e a Caatinga nos municípios de Lontra e Januária, Estado de Minas Gerais. Os ninhos foram coletados para observação da arquitetura. Neste trabalho são apresentadas informações sobre estrutura geral e forma do ninho desta espécie; número, forma e área dos favos de cria; tamanho de células de cria; tamanho de potes de mel e pólen; volume dos potes de mel e massa de pólen em potes fechados; presença de inquilinos e características de defesa. Todos os ninhos foram encontrados em cavidades subterrâneas. De modo geral, esta espécie apresenta estrutura de ninho similar a apresentada por outras espécies do mesmo gênero.

We located ten nests of Geotrigona subterranea in the transition area between Cerrado and Caatinga within the municipalities of Lontra and Januária, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil. We collected the nests to study their architecture in detail. In the present paper, we describe the general nest structure of this bee species in terms of: number, shape and area of the combs; size of the brood cells; size of honey and pollen pots; volume of honey and mass of pollen stored in closed pots; presence of inquiline species; and defensive characteristics. All nests were found in subterranean cavities. The nest structure of G. subterranea is similar to that of other congeneric species.

O sombreamento de colmeias pode ser uma forma de minimizar o estresse térmico sofrido pelas abelhas, em regiões tropicais como o Nordeste brasileiro. Neste contexto, o objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito do sombreamento proporcionado por diferentes coberturas, sobre o desenvolvimento e a qualidade do mel de colônias de Apis mellifera, em ensaio conduzido no apiário da Embrapa Meio-Norte, em Castelo do Piauí (PI). Foram instaladas colmeias sob coberturas de palha, tela sombrite (80% de sombreamento), árvores e em pleno sol, em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições. Os dados referentes à massa das colmeias e áreas com crias e alimento foram submetidos a análise de variância, pelo teste de Kruskal-Wallis. Amostras de mel das colmeias foram analisadas, quanto aos teores de hidroximetilfurfural (HMF), acidez e diastase. Verificou-se que as coberturas artificiais não proporcionaram efeitos benéficos significativos no desenvolvimento das colônias. A termorregulação foi prejudicada nas colmeias mantidas sob a cobertura de tela sombrite e naquelas expostas ao sol, no período de estiagem. O sombreamento arbóreo propiciou desenvolvimento mais rápido da área de cria e o sombreamento das coberturas construídas com palha e o arbóreo favoreceram a manutenção de níveis mais baixos de HMF no mel.

Beehives shading can be a strategy to minimize the heat stress suffered by bees in tropical regions such as the Northeastern Brazil. So, the objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of different beehives shading conditions on the development and quality of honey produced in Apis mellifera colonies. The experiment was carried out in an apiary owned by the Embrapa Meio-Norte, in Castelo do Piauí, Piauí State, Brazil. Bee colonies were placed under the shade provided by straw, polypropylene screen (80% shading), and trees, and under direct solar radiation, in a completely randomized design, with six replications. Data concerning beehives weight and breeding and feeding areas were analyzed by using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Honey samples collected from beehives were submitted to chemical analyses, in order to determine hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), acidity, and diastase activities. It was observed that the artificial covers did not provide significant beneficial effects on the colonies development. Thermoregulation was impaired in the beehives kept under polypropylene screen and those directly exposed to the sun, in the dry season. The arboreal shading provided the faster development for the breeding area and the straw and arboreal shadings favored the maintenance of lower HMF levels in the honey.

Poliginia, caracterizada pela presença de mais de uma rainha poedeira, é considerada como uma condição temporária em colônias. Em abelhas sem ferrão isso é raramente observado. Este artigo registra o primeiro caso de poliginia natural em colônia de Melipona scutellaris, com cinco rainhas poedeiras.

Polygyny, characterized by the presence of several egg-laying queens, is considered as a temporary colony status. In stingless bees it is rarely observed. This paper reports the first case of natural polygyny in Melipona scutellaris colony, with five egg-laying queens.

O mel é um produto que apresenta atividade antimicrobiana atribuída a fatores físicos e químicos. Mesmo assim, ainda é possível encontrar uma série de microrganismos presentes neste produto e que servem como indicadores de qualidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade microbiológica do mel produzido por espécies de abelhas sem ferrão (Trigonini) do Estado da Bahia. Quatorze amostras de mel foram avaliadas quanto ao teor de umidade, atividade de água, contagem padrão de bolores e leveduras, e presença de microrganismos do grupo coliforme. Um total de 50,0% das amostras apresentou contagem padrão para bolores e leveduras acima do máximo permitido pela regulamentação brasileira para alimentos. Esta desclassificação de amostras assepticamente colhidas indica a necessidade de identificação desta microbiota e sua possível ocorrência natural no mel produzido por este grupo de abelhas. Nenhuma das amostras foi desclassificada em relação à contagem de microrganismos do grupo coliforme.

Honey is a product that presents antimicrobial activity attributed to physical and chemical factors. Even so, it is still possible to find many microorganisms present in this product, which can be used as quality indicators. The objective of this work was to evaluate the microbiologic quality of the honey produced by stingless bee species from the State of Bahia, Brazil. Fourteen samples of honey were evaluated for the moisture content, water activity, standard counting of moulds and yeasts, and presence of microorganisms of coliform group. A total of 50.0% of the samples presented standard counting of moulds and yeasts above the maximum value permmited by the Brazilian food legislation. This disqualification of samples asseptically harvested indicates the need of identification of this microbiota and its possible natural occurrence in the honey produced by this group of bees. None of the samples was disqualified regarding the counting of microorganisms of the coliform group.

As características físico-químicas do mel produzido pelas abelhas sem ferrão ainda são pouco conhecidas, principalmente devido à elevada diversidade da flora apícola e à baixa produção que é inerente a estas espécies. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar as características físico-químicas de 20 amostras de mel de Jataí (Tetragonisca angustula), do município de Piracicaba, estado de São Paulo, contribuindo para o estabelecimento de um padrão de qualidade do mel das abelhas sem ferrão brasileiras, possibilitando o controle da fraude deste produto. Desta maneira, as seguintes análises foram realizadas: açúcares totais, açúcares redutores, sacarose aparente, umidade, hidroximetilfurfural, proteínas, cinzas, pH, acidez, índice de formol, condutividade elétrica, cor, atividade diastásica e atividade de água. Os resultados demonstram que a legislação atual, referente ao mel de Apis mellifera, não é adequada para todos os caracteres analisados, reforçando a necessidade de um padrão próprio para os méis de meliponíneos.

The knowledge regarding the physicochemical characteristics of the honey produced by stingless bees is still limited, mainly due to the high diversity of the floral resources and the low production that is inherent to these species. This research deals with the physicochemical characteristics of 20 samples of Tetragonisca angustula honey, from the municipality of Piracicaba, state of São Paulo, Brazil, contributing to the establishment of a quality standard for the honey produced by Brazilian stingless bees making possible the control of this product. Thus, the following parameters were determined: total sugars, reducing sugars, apparent sucrose, moisture content, hydroxymethylfurfural, proteins, ashes, pH, acidity, formol index, electrical conductivity, color, diastase activity, and water activity. The results indicated that the Brazilian standard rules, referring to the Apis mellifera honey, are not adequate to all parameters analyzed reinforcing the need of a establishment of a proper standard for the honey from meliponids.

Thirty three honey samples produced by four Melipona species from different areas of the State of Bahia, were analyzed with the aim to determine their physico-chemical characteristics, contributing to the establishment of standards for quality control. The majority of the average values for physico-chemical parameters fulfilled the quality criteria established by the Brazilian and international Legislations for Apis honey, except for moisture content, which afforded higher values. Concerning the high number of samples wich did not fit the limits for reducing sugars, it is necessary to define minimum values in order to characterize Melipona honeys, as well as criteria for use of diastasic activity.

O presente trabalho avaliou o perfil sensorial e a aceitabilidade de méis de abelhas sem ferrão submetidos a dois processos de conservação, objetivando obter maior vida de prateleira. Foram utilizadas amostras de méis de Melipona scutellaris e M. quadrifasciata, coletadas no Estado da Bahia entre dezembro de 2005 e janeiro de 2006. As amostras foram submetidas aos processos de pasteurização e desumidificação, passando em seguida por avaliação sensorial. O perfil sensorial foi determinado no Laboratório de Entomologia do Centro de Ciências Agrárias, Ambientais e Biológicas da Universidade Federal do Recôncavo da Bahia, em Cruz das Almas, Estado da Bahia. Os atributos analisados foram: fluidez, cor, aroma, cristalização, sabor e aceitabilidade. Os resultados mostraram que os processos de conservação utilizados não interferem no perfil sensorial e na aceitabilidade do produto.

The present work was conducted to evaluate the sensorial profile and the acceptability of the honey of stingless bees submitted to two conservation processes seeking to obtain longer shelf life. The samples of Melipona scutellaris and M. quadrifasciata honey were collected in the State of Bahia, Brazil, between December 2005 and January 2006. The samples were first submitted to pasteurization and dehumidification processes and then to sensorial evaluation. The sensorial profile was determined in the Laboratory of Entomology in the Center for Agrarian, Biological, and Environmental Sciences of the Federal University of Recôncavo Bahiano, in Cruz das Almas, in the state of Bahia. The analyzed attributes were: fluidity, color, scent, crystallization, flavour, and acceptability. The results show that the conservation processes used do not interfere with the sensorial profile and the product acceptability.

Conduziu-se este trabalho, com o objetivo de inventariar as plantas visitadas por abelhas em uma área de cerrado no município de Cassilândia/MS (19°06'48"S; 51°44'03"W), classificando-as para a elaboração de um catálogo de pasto apícola. Os dados foram obtidos quinzenalmente, de março/2003 a fevereiro/2004, em uma trilha com 3000 metros de extensão. A flora apícola foi representada por 49 espécies pertencentes a 41 gêneros e 26 famílias. A família Malpighiaceae apresentou maior número de espécies visitadas (12,2%) e a família Sapindaceae o maior número de abelhas coletadas (18%). Com relação ao nicho trófico ocupado pelas abelhas, apenas Apis mellifera e Trigona spinipes apresentaram atividade de forrageamento em um grande número de plantas, sendo 36,7% do total de espécies identificadas visitados pelas duas espécies. Os diferentes períodos de florescimento das espécies vegetais existentes no cerrado garantem oferta de recurso alimentar durante todo o ano.

The aim of this study is listing the plants visited by bees in a savannah area of Cassilândia/MS, Brazil (19°06'48"S; 51°44'03"W) to develop bee plant catalogue. The data were obtained twice a month from March/2003 to February/2004, along a 3 km track. The flora was represented by 49 species, 41 genera and 26 families. The Malpighiaceae family presented the highest number of visited species (12,2%) and Sapindaceae family the highest number of bees collected (18%). Regarding to the trofic niche used by bees, only Apis mellifera and Trigona spinipes presented collection activity in a great number of plants so that, 36,7% of the total of identified plant species was visited by the two species. The different blossom periods of plant species in savannah guarantee the occurrence of feed source for bees during all year long.

A fisionomia vegetal mais representativa do país, depois da floresta amazônica, é o cerrado, que ocupa atualmente dois milhões de km² do território brasileiro. Este trabalho teve como objetivo determinar as características físico-químicas de amostras de mel produzidas por Apis mellifera em um fragmento de cerrado, localizado em Itirapina, SP (22°14'S e 47°49'W). As amostras foram coletadas mensalmente, em cinco colméias, entre fevereiro e outubro de 2005 e as características avaliadas foram: açúcares redutores, redutores totais, sacarose, umidade, hidroximetilfurfural (HMF), cor, condutividade elétrica, pH, acidez, índice de formol, teor de cinzas, proteínas e viscosidade, além da análise polínica. Os resultados obtidos indicam que os limites estabelecidos pela legislação brasileira para parâmetros físico-químicos analisados são atendidos pela maioria das amostras de mel. Com relação à análise polínica, foi verificada a presença de Eucalyptus sp. como pólen dominante nos meses de fevereiro a julho e o de Citrus sp. no mês de outubro, em virtude da maior atratividade destes dois cultivos sobre as abelhas.

The most representative vegetation type of the country after the Amazonian forest is the "cerrado" (savannah) area, which currently occupies two million square kilometer of the Brazilian territory. This paper deals with the physicochemical characteristics of honey samples produced by Apis mellifera in a fragment of savannah area located in Itirapina, São Paulo State (22°14'S and 47°49'W), Brazil. The samples were collected monthly, in five beehives, from February to October 2005 and the following characters were determined: reducing sugars, total reducing sugars, apparent sucrose, moisture content, hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), color, electrical conductivity, pH, acidity, formol index, ashes, protein and viscosity, beyond the pollinic analysis. The results indicate that the limits established by the current Brazilian honey legislation regarding physicochemical parameters are fulfilled by the majority of the honey samples. Regarding pollinic analysis it was verified the Eucalyptus sp. as dominant pollen from February to July, and of Citrus sp. in October, due to the attractiveness of these two crops to the foraging bees.

A abelha Oxytrigona tataira, vulgarmente conhecida por "tataíra" ou "caga-fogo", é uma espécie de ampla distribuição no Brasil, conhecida pela sua grande defensividade que acaba por dificultar a sua inclusão em projetos de meliponicultura. Este fato reflete diretamente na falta de interesse pela sua conservação nos ecossistemas bem como na escassez de estudos voltados a aspectos intrínsecos de sua biologia. O objetivo deste trabalho foi descrever a arquitetura de ninho de O. tataira, além de fornecer informações adicionais relacionadas ao seu comportamento. Informações referentes à entrada da colônia; área de cria; número, dimensões e arranjo dos favos; dimensões de realeiras e células de cria; altura de pilares; área de alimento; dimensões e volume dos potes de mel; dimensões dos potes de pólen; peso da massa de pólen armazenada nos potes; determinação da umidade do mel; e estimativa da população desta espécie são apresentadas.

The Oxytrigona tataira stingless bee, commonly known as "tataíra" or "caga-fogo" bee, is a widely distributed species in Brazil. It is known by its great defensive behavior that makes difficult its inclusion in stingless bee beekeeping projects. This fact reflects directly in the lack of interest for its conservation in the ecosystems, as well as in the shortage of studies regarding intrinsic biological aspects to this species. The aim of this work was to describe O. tataira nest architecture, besides supplying additional information related to its behavior. Information regarding the colony entrance; brood area; number, dimensions and arrangement of the combs; royal and worker rearing cells dimensions; pillars height; food area; dimensions and volume of the honey storage pots; dimensions of pollen storage pots; weight of the stored pollen mass; determination of honey humidity; and population estimation are presented.

Análises de amostras de mel da abelha Melipona mandacaia provenientes do município de São Gabriel, região semi-árida do Estado da Bahia, foram realizadas com o objetivo de contribuir para o conhecimento das características físico-químicas desse produto. Os parâmetros analisados foram: Umidade (%); Hidroximetilfurfural (mg.kg-1); Açúcares Redutores (%); Sacarose (%); Viscosidade (mPa. s); Condutividade Elétrica (µS); pH; Acidez (meq.kg-1); Índice de Formol (mL.kg-1); e Cor. A maioria dos parâmetros físico-químicos apresentou valores médios adequados para o consumo humano, o que possibilita a exploração desse produto pelas comunidades rurais da região semi-árida da Bahia. Contudo, o teor de umidade elevado é um aspecto que requer uma maior atenção por parte do produtor, que deverá ter maiores cuidados com a higiene na manipulação do mel durante a coleta e no processo de armazenamento, evitando a sua contaminação por microrganismos que causam a depreciação do produto.

Honey samples of the Melipona mandacaia stingless bee collected in the São Gabriel county, semi-arid region of the State of Bahia, Brazil, were analyzed with the objective of contributing for the knowledge of the characteristics physico-chemical of that product. The parameters analyzed were: Moisture (%); Hydroxymethylfurfural (mg.kg-1); Reducing Sugars (%); Sucrose (%); Viscosity (mPa.s); Electrical Conductivity (µS); pH; Acidity (meq.kg-1); Formol Index (mL.kg-1); and Color. Most of the physico-chemical parameters showed values adequated for the human consumption, facilitating the exploration of the product by rural communities of the semi-arid area of Bahia. However, the high moisture content is an aspect that deserves a greater attention by the part of producers, who should have concern with hygiene cares when manipulating the honey during the collection and the storage processes, avoiding its contamination with microorganisms that may cause depreciation of the product.

Análises de amostras de mel da abelha Melipona asilvai provenientes dos municípios de Itaberaba e Tucano, região semi-árida do Estado da Bahia, foram realizadas com o objetivo de contribuir para o conhecimento das características físico-químicas desse produto. A maioria dos parâmetros físico-químicos apresentou valores adequados para o consumo humano, o que possibilita a exploração desse produto pelas comunidades rurais da região semi-árida da Bahia. Contudo, o teor de umidade elevado é um aspecto que merece uma maior atenção por parte do produtor, que deverá ter cuidado com a higiene na manipulação do mel durante a coleta e no processo de armazenamento.

Honey samples of the Melipona asilvai stingless bee collected in the Itaberaba and Tucano counties, semi-arid region of the State of Bahia, Brazil, were analyzed with the objective of contributing for the knowledge of the characteristics physical-chemical of that product. Most of the physical-chemical parameters showed values adequated for the human consumption, faciliting the exploration of that product by rural communities of the semi-arid area of Bahia. However, the high humidity values is an aspect that deserves a greater attention by the part of producers, who should have concern with hygiene cares when manipulating the honey during the collection and the storage processes.
